DEECA (Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action) needed to transform how Victoria assesses and responds to bushfire risk. Their existing framework was hampered by outdated data and processing bottlenecks that couldn't meet the demands of modern risk assessment.
Kablamo was engaged to design and deploy CloudFARM — a cloud-native, fully scalable AWS platform to underpin the next generation of bushfire risk modelling.
The challenge
The Phoenix RapidFire model, originally designed for desktop use, was struggling to scale. Manual post-processing workflows created bottlenecks. Outdated data limited modelling accuracy. High operational costs came with limited capacity.
DEECA needed a platform that could deliver near-limitless scale while maintaining cost-effectiveness and enabling advanced machine learning integration.
The approach
CloudFARM enables scientists and fire chiefs to create, simulate, and repeat complex scenarios with high-resolution data.
The CloudFARM solution was architected around four key principles:
- Cloud-Native — Migrated Phoenix RapidFire to a high-performance AWS cloud environment
- ML Integration — Amazon SageMaker for sophisticated analysis and enhanced predictions
- Automation — Serverless pipelines using Lambda and Athena for massive scale
- Cost Control — Auto-scaling resources with rich operator visibility
The platform allows scientists and fire chiefs to swiftly create, simulate, and repeat complex scenarios with high-resolution data. Advanced machine learning capabilities using Amazon SageMaker enable more sophisticated analysis and enhanced predictive accuracy.
Technical foundations
The solution leverages AWS services including Amazon SageMaker for compute and ML, Amazon Athena and S3 for data pipelines, and Phoenix RapidFire with Bayesian Network models for prediction. The architecture prioritises scalability, automation, cloud-native design, and cost-effectiveness.
